INTERNATIONAL SURF DAY HONG KONG

In 2004, Surfrider Foundation established the International Surfing Day (ISD) which is held annually on the third Saturday of June. ISD is an environmentally conscious sports-centered holiday that celebrates the love of surfing and to help raise awareness of the world’s beaches and coastal environments.

Now in its 15th year, ISD is celebrated globally with more than 200 events taking place worldwide. In 2018, Mavericks and Volcom teamed up to host the first officially recognized ISD event in Hong Kong. Taking place at Pui O Beach with the theme “Protect & Enjoy”, ISD in Hong Kong featured a range of activities including live music, movie screenings and of course, surfing.

For ISD 2018, HKwalls collaborated with Mavericks and Volcom to create a special mural for the event. Taka, a Hong Kong based Japanese artist, was invited by HKwalls to paint on an improvised wall made of discarded surfboards. Taka’s mural is inspired by the energetic motion of the ocean and depicts a whale leaping out among the green and blue ocean waves.
